Tina Tina Amanda AmandaMaureen was an athlete of natural talent and was a fan of tough athletic games. Her natural ability to perform was an ideal complement to her passion for sport. This was apparent when she won every Feis for theatre and drama the Irish had to offer. When she was 14, she had been accepted into the Abbey Theater, where her love of classical theatre as well as operatic music was followed. Charles Laughton became captivated with her stunningly beautiful eyes when seeing a screen test. Before casting her to star for the role in Jamaica Inn (1939), Laughton and his partner, Erich Pommer, changed her name changed from Maureen FitzSimons to "Maureen O'Hara" which is a less slender name to be used for the marquee. In contract with Laughton the next film of Maureen's was scheduled to be shot on location in America (The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939)) with RKO Pictures. Maureen was able to purchase her contract from Laughton after the epic was a huge success. Maureen was just 19 years old when she appeared alongside Laughton in two films.
